A Charging Lien is a lien attaching to a judgment or recovery awarded to a plaintiff who secures payment of the plaintiff's attorney's fees and expenses. It entitles an attorney who has sued someone on a client's behalf the right to be paid from the proceeds of the lawsuit, if there are any, before the client receives those proceeds. This also refers to a lien on specified property in the debtor's possession.
