The danger that asbestos poses to humans and animals is that microscopic asbestos fibers can be inhaled into the lungs, where they lodge in lung tissue and cannot be removed. After a gestation period lasting twenty years or more, people who have inhaled asbestos often develop fatal lung diseases. Normally, this hazard exists only where asbestos exists in dry and crushable (friable) form. When working around friable asbestos, remediation workers must wear full-coverage protective garments and must breathe through either passive filter respirators or active supplied air systems, depending on the specific situation. Prior to removal, workers thoroughly wet friable asbestos using low-pressure pumping equipment and chemical wetting agents to minimize its potential for airborne dispersal. If the abatement action is indoors, a temporary containment structure around the work area is generally required. In order to prevent contamination of surrounding areas through possible leakage of airborne particles outside the containment area, the abatement contractor must design and construct a low-pressure air volume within the containment structure. These measures, when properly executed, are completely effective in protecting people who must work near the abatement operation.
