Pope John XXIII was Pope from 1958 until his death. He was born Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli in the Lombardy region of Italy. He served in the Royal Italian Army in World War I as a stretcher bearer and chaplain.

As nuncio during World War II he made many efforts to save Jewish refugees from the Holocaust. He was known affectionately as 'Good Pope John' and was considered the most beloved Pope in history. In 2000 he was beatified by Pope John Paul II.
