Katharine Hepburn was an American actress of film, television and stage. She holds the record for the most Best Actress Oscar wins with four, from 12 nominations. Hepburn won an Emmy Award in 1976 for her lead role in Love Among the Ruins, and was nominated for four other Emmys, two Tony Awards and eight Golden Globes.

Hepburn was an accomplished athlete as well, due to her father's influence. She was the epitome of the modern young woman during the early years of the 20th century - outspoken, unconventional, intellectual. She preferred pants to dresses and usually went without makeup.

Hepburn first worked with Spencer Tracy in 1942 on Woman of the Year. They began a lifelong clandestine romance, complicated by Tracy's unwillingness to divorce his estranged wife because he was Catholic. Their relationship lasted until his death in 1967.

In 1999, the American Film Institute ranked Hepburn as the greatest female star in the history of American cinema.
